Earlier this May, British composer, conductor, and pianist Thomas Adès was announced to be Principal Guest Conductor of the Hallé Orchestra, beginning in September 2026. Adés will hold the position for a minimum of three seasons.
Despite having held high-profile positions with the Hallé, such as composer-in-association and artist-in-residence, the appointment is Adès's first formal conducting title with the orchestra.
On the Hallé's website, Adès comments:
"Composing is the most important part of my musical life, but conducting has always played an essential role. Working directly with orchestral musicians and soloists and shaping the interpretation of my music and that of other composers has been an endless source of joy and inspiration. It feels like the right moment to have a deeper relationship with an orchestra over a number of years."
This upcoming the Hallé's 2026–27 season in Manchester, Adès will conduct three programmes, in November 2026 and February 2027, including his own compositions, alongside premieres of composers Gabriella Smith and Francisco Coll. Works by Stravinsky, Elgar, Berg, Chabrier, and Gerald Barry will also be featured.
