El Último Sueño de Frida y Diego to close 2025-26 Metropolitan Opera Live in HD season

Metropolitan Opera Live in HD ends its 2025-26 season this May 30 with a screening of Gabriela Lena Frank’s opera El Último Sueño de Frida y Diego. Nearing its 20th year, the Met’s Opera Live in HD is a series of live opera performances at the Met that are then broadcast in venues throughout the United States and the rest of the world. The program has since allowed non-frequent opera goers to watch Met productions while also initiating new fans into opera.

Closing the program’s season, Frank’s El Último Sueño de Frida y Diego is a magical realist take on the lives and love affairs of historic Mexican painters Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. The opera was also Frank’s Met debut earlier this month, featuring mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard as Frida and baritone Carlos Álvarez as Diego.

The opera first premiered at the San Diego Opera in 2022. It is also worth noting that earlier this month, Frank was the recipient of the Pulitzer Prize for Music for another work, “Picaflor: A Future Myth.”
